2/2/2013 - My Kids' Plentiful Friends

Image
Day #33.....2/2/13. Interesting that 2/2 is day 33.... :-) Still feeling the lucky vibe of 2013.... Today's thought is that I am lucky to have daughters who strive for (and I think are pretty successful at) having a plentiful of good friends.... Had an awesome lunch with one of Alexa's friends and then spent the evening hosting one of Anna's..... Playing off of 2/1's lucky thought, I hope my kids can also develop their networks of friends and support. It takes a village.....

2/1/2013 - My Network

Day #32 of Lucky Year 2013....the 1st day of February....has come to an end. Today, I feel lucky for my network of friends, colleagues, and family....not just online, on Facebook, but in real life, real tangible forms. Nobody can do it only on their own, we all need assistance and I feel blessed that, whenever I turn, in need, to others, I can depend on my network for love and support. Maybe it's why I have not ever wanted to venture far away from where I have lived/worked...it's hard to build a new network. Hard, but not impossible. So, if you want to feel lucky as I do, start building your networks, one person at a time.

1/31/2013 - Community Calendar Creators

So the first month, the first 31 days, of lucky 2013 are now in the books! Tonight, I felt REALLY lucky to live in a place like Oaklyn where people from all kinds of organizations in town came together to work on a composite community calendar. There were some great synergies, and ideas in that room and I cannot wait to see the finished product on the Boro website. thanks for organizing, Bonnie Wright Taft , Janet Rudderow LaBar , and Mayor and Council!

1/30/2013 - My Dissertation Advisor

Image
What a cool number day for Day #30 of lucky 2013. It was 013013 today. 13-13 if you will!!!! Luckiness today was felt early, in a day filled with ups and downs....a meeting with my advisor has me close to a Dissertation Proposal Defense!!!  I am REALLY lucky to have an advisor who has been advocating for me since the get go and continues to do so! ... I am so lucky and maybe because of it, someday, the EdD will come!

1/29/2013 - PTA Talent Show

Turning in earlier than usual tonight, end of Day #29 of lucky day 2013! My lucky feelings today are for the fact that the kids of OPS have a wonderful tradition of the PTA Talent Show. Led so patiently by Claudia Super and Shannon Merkh , these kids are able to express their artistic inspirations. We are lucky for the folks that volunteer to coordinate (and also to Kaitlyn Davis who helps backstage with music) this event - looking forward to the show -thanks all!

1/28/2013 - OMAYSC Board

Image
Day #28 of lucky year 2013 has come to an end....today, I feel lucky to have such a great group of people on the OMAYSC Board! It really makes Board meetings a pleasure (and, I KNOW, that is a strange sentiment)! :-) Thanks everyone, great meeting tonight - Vincent Mondile , Jack Deen , Claudia Super , Joseph Abbate , Steven Rigler , Julius Trimbach, Anne Tiedeken Mondile , Denise Currie , Richard Currie , Shannon Super , and Billy LaBine! And thanks to the countless other people who support our work!

1/27/2013 - Cousin Ashley

Image
It is the end of Day #27 in lucky year 2013.....today, I realized (well, I knew it before, but it was reinforced) how lucky we are that our children have a great role model and cousin in Ashley Walters !!!! Ashley, HAPPY 18TH BIRTHDAY!! I know Anna and Alexa really look up to you and I am so glad you guys have lived close and they have been able to hang out with you! From your hair braiding ability to your dedication on the field of play and in the classroom, you have provided a great model for them as they get older and transition from OPS to CHS...hopefully as well as you have!

1/26/2013 - My Awesome Mom

Day #26 of lucky year 2013 has come to a close...today's lucky thought is easy (and predictable). I feel lucky to have an awesome mom! Bonnie Bechtel Sherr had a birthday today - Happy Birthday Mom - LOVE YOU SO MUCH!

1/25/2013 - Helping Kathy Press with PTA Bingo Night

Day #25 of the lucky 2013 year! Today I feel lucky to have been able to assist the amazing Kathleen Kronberger Press with PTA Bingo Night at OPS. What a night of family fun - thanks to all who came, thanks to Kathy for arranging it all - what a great job! - and thanks to all who baked for the snack table....YUM!

1/24/2013 - Being a Part of the Penn Band

Day #24 of lucky 2013 has come to an end. And, as I drift off to sleep, I, as I do daily/nightly feel lucky. Lucky to have been a part of the Penn Band for the past 27 years now.....each year brings new students, new leadership styles, but the music and the mirth are constant. So happy I can serve as the Asst. Director and glad to be able to play along a few times a year too!

1/23/2013 - Piano Teacher - Anna Sakoian

Another frigid day in 2013! Lucky Year Day #23....and today I feel SO lucky that Anna and Alexa have such a wonderful piano teacher. Anna Sakoian at the Conservatory of Musical Arts is such a caring, talented, patient teacher. And I LOVE listening to my daughters' practicing and playing in their recitals....music is an important part of my life so seeing my children develop musically is a joy and a blessing!

1/22/2013 - My Warm House (and helping others to be warm as well)

It is a VERY CHILLY Day #22 of Lucky 2013......and, since it is so cold outside, I am feeling lucky that we have the warmth of our home. I worry about those who are homeless or living in a home with less than optimal heat and/or insulation. I pray for them tonight as even a trip to the car to get something I forgot made me shiver....I am glad that my Church offers warm shelter for men who would normally be out in this cold, but I still worry about those who refuse help or for whom there is no space. We who are reading Facebook from the warmth of our homes/offices/etc. should take the time to think how lucky we are and to work to make things better for those who have less. Off to bed - stay warm everyone!

1/21/2013 - Alexa's Uneventful Trip to the Dentist

Lucky 2013 has now completed 3 weeks, 21 lucky days....and, today, I DO feel SO LUCKY....Alexa's trip to the dentist (first cavities ever) was uneventful and all of the fillings came with NO NOVOCAINE! What a trooper. Nice to have a day off from work to be there with her and then to have a nice family evening! Now have to finish editing this Dissertation proposal and get it off to my advisor (WOO HOO!). Hope to get to bed soon!

1/20/2013 - Lucky My Kids Love Sports

The 20th Day of Lucky 2013 and watching the footage of Obama's swearing in made me think of my lucky comment from 1/15, about Dr. King's dream....but, this exercise is not (that much) about being political, so my lucky thought of the day is more of the mundane. Today, I feel lucky that my daughters have a love of sports. Not just playing them (which they do love to do), but also watching them with Sarah and me. Talking football strategy with Alexa during the NFC and AFC Championship games made me really happy this afternoon/evening. I love having these parent/child moments....I hope they never end.

1/19/2013 - Alexa's Diverse Friend Group

Image
Lucky Year 2013 rolled through its 19th day today....we had better news about Uncle Danny's condition as he got transferred to Hershey Medical Center and seems to be responding to treatment! As for me feeling lucky, today, I feel lucky that Alexa has developed such a wide and diverse friend base. From the kids in Collingswood on her Rec and Travel Basketball teams (which all started from the wonderful Colls Travel Soccer) through to the kids from the 5th grade at OPS, she h ... as so many wonderful, silly, fun friends....and I like them too :-) . Anna is building her base too, it just takes her a little longer to warm up to people than it does for Alexa....but she told me today she likes basketball, wants to play softball in the Spring and might even try SOCCER! WOW.....so, here's to a good set of friends, one can never have too many good ones!

1/18/2013 - My Amazing Extended Family

Lucky 2013 continued today, with a bit of a melancholy tone (because of Sarah's uncle and his extreme illness). But, as with many of life's bumps in the roads, there is another side.....It has made me realize how lucky I am to have such an amazing extended family.....and when family comes together, even in the tough times, true love can be found. I am also very lucky to have amazing In-Laws....my Mother in Law had a birthday today and my prayers and love go to her as she worries about her little brother...Hoping good news is on the horizon.....

1/17/2013 - Girl Scout Cookie Time

Image
1/17/2013....now 17 days into Lucky 2013 and I have enjoyed this exercise in luckiness....Today, you probably all know why I feel lucky, and it's probably strange to some, but I LOVE Girl Scout Cookie time....it's so fun to sell with Alexa and Anna - I love watching Alexa calculating the amount of the sales and then dividing the sales between her and Anna so they can achieve their goals (why are they always at the top of the rewards list....darn Beach Towels) :-) . But I DO love this time....if you need cookies, you know who to call :-) .

1/16/2013 - Being a PennsWay Coordinator

Day #16 of lucky 2013 and I knew what I was going to feel lucky about when I woke up this AM. Today was the Thank You Luncheon for the Penn's Way Campaign at Penn. This is a campaign that raises TONS of money for really important charities and initiatives from the faculty and staff of Penn and UPHS....I am so lucky to be able to be one of the school-based coordinators for the past many years...and I love the program. I missed the luncheon (too much work), but I want to thank all my fellow coordinators and colleagues who participate! Giving is truly a blessing!

1/15/2013 - MLK's Dream is becoming reality (slowly)

Day #15 of Lucky 2013 has ended. I feel lucky for a lot of things tonight, especially after a wonderful (if long) meeting with the Elders of my church.....but, on the day of Dr. Martin Luther King's birth, I feel lucky to live in a world where Dr. King's dream becomes more of a reality every day. YES, I know, there is a long way to go in many, many ways, but I do feel like progress is being made, and maybe it's more hope than reality, but, for today, I also have a dream, a dream that with each year, I can feel even luckier, because we have moved that much closer to Dr. King's dream....

1/14/2018 - My Timing Worked Out

Writing this Lucky 2013 report with my eyes 1/2 closed tonight, I am exhausted....BUT, got a lot done today (left a lot to be done as well (at least 58 unanswered (but read) emails), but let's focus on why I am lucky. I am lucky that my time worked out for me today. Other than leaving poor Kate at the bank for 20 minutes, waiting for me (I did finally arrive), I made it to all the places I had to be, on time....and, the most lucky part at all, I was able to get to the gym and get a full swim in before they closed. But, tonight is a turn in early night....the 58 emails (and the other 4,500 in the inbox) can wait until later.....NIGHT ALL!

1/13/2013 - Old First's Music Program

Lucky day #13 of 2013!  I was hoping this day would be a lucky one - and it WAS!!!  Great day spent with family and friends, but, it started off with such a musical church service.  OFR has such wonderfully diverse music and I am SO LUCKY to be a part of it both as a participant and, like today, as an audience member.  And the main reason for all of this, of course, is the amazing Julie Steiner who leads us and inspires us in our musicality.  And Timothy Kuntz who provides us amazing support and inspiration on the piano, organ, and even with his voice!  I am lucky, WE are lucky.  Thanks be to God! https://www.facebook.com/adam.sherr/videos/10100602396065257/

1/12/2013 - My Love of Numbers

Image
Today was lucky dozen-th day....Day 12 of Lucky year 2013. A day filled with basketball...from Anna's Rec Game (win) to Alexa's Rec Game (win) to a Penn Women/Men's Doubleheader at Princeton (loss & loss)......BUT, throughout the day, I was reminded by how lucky I am that my parents instilled in me a love of numbers. I guess it was inevitable. Both were math majors and did meet via math classes at Penn, so of course I would end up loving numbers....but today was great for  numbers....This morning, at Dunkin' Donuts, the bill was $16.16 and our order number was 818. We passed 22222 on the van's odometer....and we (Alexa and I) noticed that, when Penn was losing 42-24 in the game, there was 15:51 left on the game clock....nice, huh? Now, before you make fun of me, you knew that in the 365 daily luckies, there would be some geeky ones  :-) . Hope you are all having a great weekend!

1/11/2013 - Amazing Oaklyn Teens

Image
Had more of a FB hiatus than I thought (from the computer, was just mobile) so the LUCKY 2013 Update for Friday, 1/11/12 was delayed - apologies......Friday ended a busy work week, but we all survived and we have a new addition for next month! GREAT NEWS! But, although I am lucky to have a new teammate at work, what I REALLY felt lucky about on Friday is that I get to work with some amazing teenagers in Oaklyn. Our OMAYSC Gym Night Counselors, led by  Jessie Super , were abl e to take the chaos of 76 kids, in a packed gym, on a rainy Friday night, and make sure everyone had exercise, had fun, and were safe. I am so glad to be working with Jessie and her compatriots,  Bruce Lawless , Kelly  Rodgers ,  Doug Forbes , Rachel  Galante , and Becca  Hall . These are the future leaders of Oakyln, if not America!  :-)  And, as always, thanks to  Claudia Super  who organizes them for me and for  Vincent Mondile ,  Anne Tiedeken Mondile ,...

1/10/2013 - Collingswood Travel Soccer (and Coach Bob McHugh)

Day #10 of Lucky YEar 2013 ended an hour ago....another 600+ email day so turning in an hour after I had hoped....part of the reason I am up so late is also what I feel so lucky about today! The Collingswood Travel Soccer Program has been so good for Alexa. Today we celebrated the end of the Fall season, which, although the Final Record of 2-4-4 was not as pristine as their U11 Division Championship run of Spring 2012, they played really well as a team and only let 10 goals in, in the entire 10-game Fall season. I feel lucky that Alexa is progressing so well in a sport she loves, and I feel REALLY LUCKY that she is coached by such wonderful coaches,  Bob McHugh  and Harry Klotz! She has made such great friends and looks forward to a Spring Season that starts in less than 8 weeks! WOW! Time flies....

1/9/2013 - My Kids Make Me Laugh

Image
1/9/2013 - Day #9 of lucky 2013!! ANOTHER long, tiring day (I deleted 671 emails and still have another 200 to deal with tomorrow AM (read and not yet answered). But I still feel really lucky tonight. Lucky that my kids make me laugh. Even though I was extremely tired, exhausted even, at 8:45PM tonight, their antics on the basketball court had me crying in laughter. I love that my family makes me laugh, laughter is the best medicine!  :-)  And it is so much better than the alternative....I am going to laugh myself to sleep....Night All!

1/8/2013 - Oaklyn PTA

Week #2 of Lucky 2013 has begun...and today was a long, tough day. I am tired.....but I also feel lucky....I feel lucky that I am a member of a town that has an excellent PTA comprised of parents, teachers, and administrators that want to make sure the kids of Oaklyn have the best experiences possible.....from a cool bird-themed assembly, to raising funds from trimming and mailing thousands of box tops, to planning an amazing Talent Show, to planning the huge Spring Fling, parents of Oaklyn volunteer their time and really work hard for the kids....and isn't that's what it is all about - working for the kids?? I am turning in early, first day of classes at Penn tomorrow, GOOD NIGHT!

1/7/2013 - Amazing Co-Workers

It is the end of the 1st week of 2013.....Day #7. I love the numbers 7 and 13 so 1/7/13, I hoped, would be a good day....and it was....BECAUSE, of teamwork. I am SO LUCKY that I work with such an amazing group of people. Sure, sometimes we argue like the family table at Thanksgiving, but when it comes down to it, on a crazy busy day when we are orienting 35 new students to Penn Nursing (on less that 4 hours of sleep, for me), my colleagues came together and ensured the event went off smoothly and efficiently. I was really worried driving to work, but my worries were for naught...what a team, and I am lucky. SPECIAL thanks go to my right hand people, the Event team of  Turner ,  Gaulton , and  Ricks . They had every detail covered. I hope that you can all find teams as good as I have experienced where you are working. BRING ON WEEK #2!

1/6/2013 - Prayer!

Image
Day number 6 of 1/13/2013 ended 90 minutes ago (sorry this is late!)...but I am still feeling lucky...today, the first Sunday of 2013, Epiphany, I feel lucky for PRAYER! Not just prayers for me, but also that  Michael Caine  asked me to be his prayer partner during today's Communion and that people felt comfortable praying with me. I also pray for those who are going through health issues such as  Sarah 's uncle and people facing upcoming medical tests. and procedures...praying for others is an amazing gift.....and I am lucky to be able to do so in such a great place as OFR! OK, back to work (yes, I have a project that MUST be done tomorrow AM...pray for me that I can get it done)  :-)

1/5/2013 - Christmas Ties

Image
Lucky Year #13 continues....Day 5, 1/5/2013......Tonight, I realized it is the last Day of the Christmas Season....what?, you say, the radio stopped playing Christmas music long ago and the stores have Valentine's Day goods up already...but it has been Christmas, for me, for the past 12 days (and I have listened to Christmas Music from Friday after Thanksgiving until today). BUT, I feel lucky for CHRISTMAS TIES....I  <3  my Christmas ties and I wear them every day I can betwee n the Friday after Thanksgiving until the 12th day of Christmas. Tomorrow is Epiphany, so I cannot wear one to Church (wonder what I will pick instead). Had a pretty casual vacation this year, so I did not get to wear them all...so here is one that I neglected. I'll have to be sure I get it into the rotation next year. I WAS able to wear the ones given to me by  Dee Ricks and  Emily Sabato !  :-)  So, until next Christmas, the ties go away tonight. Hope you all had a GREAT Christma...

1/4/2013 - Youth Sports Programs (and Coaches)

Day #4 of lucky year 2013.....tonight, I feel SO lucky to have such great youth sports programs in which the girls can participate. Tonight it was Collingswood Basketball (Rec and Travel) with Dom Carino and Jamie O'Neill, soon it will be Colls Soccer (with wonderful Coach  Bob ) and then OBLL Softball with  Kathleen Kronberger Press , Shawn Fore and  Nick Cussat  and  Craig Stauts . Then we have had Swim in the Summer (thanks Chris Sylvester and  Erin O'Shea ) and Fall Soccer with  Gerry Davidson, and  Chris Grimaldi  and  Jen Kline Cassel  and Colls Soccer again and our first season of  Oaklyn Field Hockey ! Basically, there is a special place in my heart for all the people who coach in youth sports.....Youth sports programs teach skills, not just on the field, but off the field too. So I am lucky I live in Oaklyn where so many great programs reside and close to Collingswood where there are so many options as well. Happy Week...

1/3/2013 - Healers

1/3/13 - Day #3 - especially lucky 1313! Today, I feel lucky for all of the healers I have in my life and the healing I have received. From Dr. Smith who, this morning, adjusted my back and made me feel so much better (which is the impetus for this theme today), to my new NP, who I like a lot, to all the people in my life who heal...not just me, but heal in the community and heal in the world. Especially to my wife,  Sarah , who heals at work all day at Temple Student Health and then comes home to take care of her family (including me). I hope all of you find the healing you need and are friends/family with a bunch of good healers. Good Night All!

1/2/2013 - Public Servants

Lucky Day #2 - 1/2/2013....today, I feel lucky for all those people who do public service....from the folks newly sworn in on the Oaklyn School Board tonight, to all of the people standing in the Oaklyn Boro Court who were sworn in as Council Members and other Boro Boards and positions, to the members of the police and fire who keep us safe and secure, even to the yahoos in Washington who realized we could not go over the "Fiscal Cliff" (I reserve my right to have disdain for them again when they start fighting in 2-3 days).......most people who do Public Service do it as a volunteer or a semi-volunteer (there is no way their pay equalizes what they give back in their jobs/positions) and we are lucky that people want to do it. And I feel lucky to be in Oaklyn, where we are small, but mighty, and caring.

1/1/2013 - My Job

Feeling like 2013 will be "lucky 13"......I want to try to post, daily, why I feel lucky....let's see if I can find something each day to feel lucky about - hoping it is a struggle, not to find one, but to narrow down the choices...... So, Today, Lucky Day #1, 1/1/13 - I feel lucky that I have the job I do. Yes, it is overwhelming at times, but it is pretty stable (which is saying a lot in this day and age) and it gives me off the week between Christmas and New Years (even if I do work from home a little during the holidays). So, I am lucky for Penn Nursing and the University of PA, today, and I am lucky I love what I do for a living.
